Ironman Lake Placid, 2004: My brother's an Ironman, and I want to be one, too.
There is not much else to do, except assemble all of the million items of minutiae that one needs to complete an Ironman triathlon. For example, my packing list includes: Sunscreen, helmet, race -belt, race kit, running shoes, cycling shoes, wetsuit, swim skin, visor, SFQ hat, sunglasses, books to hand out, books to read, race kit, sanity, sense of humor, positive attitude, Cliff bloks, Picky Bars, so on and so forth,…It’s a lengthy list.
I have finished my last long 18 mile run, and survived my final super-duper long Sunday, racking up another 107 mile bike ride, now it is time for all of that work over the last 12 weeks to sink in and hopefully show up on Race day.
Moments before embarking on my final long run of this Ironman build.
My bike is currently sitting comfortably inside a Tribike Transport truck rumbling across our great nation. I hope all of the red states in the middle are kind to its liberal resolve; my Trek has been a democrat since birth.
My bike deserved a wash after its last BIG Sunday, and before its EPIC road trip.
I think I am ready for whatever Lake Placid has in store; I do have splits I want to hit, but the exciting/frustrating part of triathlon, especially Ironman, is that there is so much time for things to go right, and so much time for things to go wrong. It is the only type of gambling I enjoy.
I just want to swim, bike and run as fast as I can.
Mary and I pulled over to take this photo on our drive from NYC to LP to cheer on our big bro.
To all of my fellow competitors, don’t forget to pat the plane!
