Well, well, well, here we are again on Tuesday! Today I am posting the fruits from one of my favorite writing exercises, crafting a scene using five random words plucked from the Dictionary.
I love writing fiction, but I don't do it enough, so this was a fun and needful exercise to pump my creative juices.
Following are the words I needed to use in the scene:
Intonation
Deficit
Buttonhole
Sweater
Redemption
INT. CHERRY OAK HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
The grey sweater Jason passed to Jackie underneath the bathroom stall wasn't the one she wanted. It was too light, she needed the charcoal hued one. He should’ve known that.
“Jason!” Jackie yells behind the door.
“What?” Jason, Jackie’s older brother, replies while matting down his eyebrows in the mirror lacking any fear that a roaming proctor will write him up for being in the Girl’s bathroom during the middle of fifth period.
“This isn’t it! I wanted the one I left on top of the dryer! This one isn’t dark enough!”
“Jackie, you will be alone on stage with the lights pointed directly at you, the color of the sweater doesn’t matter.”
“You don’t get it.”
“I get it, you’re nervous, but you have a gorgeous intonation, as Mrs. Robuck says.” His eyes rolling while gestures in air quotes.
Bursting out from the stall, “This isn’t just any performance!’ Lurching for the sink to steady herself. ‘It’s redemption!”
Turning toward his little sister, “The only person who believes Paige is a better singer than you, is you.’ Slinking backwards out of the bathroom. ‘There is no such as a Jackie Rhodes deficit of talent.”
Alone, staring at her shaken reflection, Jackie grabs an empty buttonhole on her jeans, and says quietly, “But the sweater I wanted is longer and would cover this up.”
End Scene
What do you think? I am open to and would appreciate any and all feedback.
The song and video choice today is not only an incredibly upbeat tune, but it has a “Dance-off” near the end, and who doesn’t appreciate and enjoy a Dance-off? Here is my girl Britney and You Drive Me Crazy.
