How is everyone doing? Doesn’t it feel like nine years has passed since last Tuesday? I am not sure what I can add to the conversation, because I don’t have any young kids at home, I have been “working” from home for years, 99% of my minimal social life revolves around triathlon training, aka, we never go “out”, and Marion should have plenty of work for his show, (I can’t tell you what it is yet, but it’s a streaming show from a production company that rhymes with “Carvel”). Then again, they still have some principle photography to shoot, which is shut down, so who knows? Nothing is certain right now, but my everyday life is pretty much the same.
Well, not exactly.
One might assume that I would be upset because my Triathlon season imploded. Ironman Oceanside, 70.3 was cancelled, and even though Ironman St. George has not been officially called off, the chances of it moving forward are slim, but I am not upset, (about lost races anyway), regardless of the COVID-19 cloud looming overhead, I won’t be racing in any events for the foreseeable future, because the Universe threw a wad of gum in my hair somewhere in downtown LA during the marathon that I am still combing out.
Poor thing. I did not feel good here. LA Marathon, 2020.
What I thought/hoped was just “post marathon” soreness in my right high hamstring/glute area, has not gone away since the race, (nearly ten days ago), and the one time I tried to run last Thursday was excruciating after just three steps, therefore any running, (even hard pedaling), is on stand-by until I get this leg deal figured out and healed up. That is my biggest challenge right now, following through with not running, because doing so would only increase the severity of my injury and hold me back even longer.
I could do it, but it would really hurt, and not the exhaustive pain we endurance athletes crave, but sharp, wincing pain that is enjoyable for no one. (See photo above).
Also, with zero races, (and/or any kind of athletic goal waving at me beyond the horizon), I am taking this odd, stand-still time in our history to truly be still, and give my body, heart, and mind a real chance to recover and rebuild.
I am doing a lot of upper body work... I mean, I gotta give myself something to nibble on.:)
This morning during a strength session. St. Patrick's Day, 2020.
Moreover, my daily focus is on gaining as much sleep as possible, (8+ hours is my new norm), eating well, (which includes a little beer and wine here and there), walking around my neighborhood, (checking in on a few housebound elderly neighbors), talking with great friends and family both near and far, watching Rachel Maddow, some CNN, and a smidgen of Fox News to keep things interesting, shaking my head at the incessant rain that keeps mucking up the paws of my favorite creatures, reading, writing, breathing and believing deeply that somehow this is all happening for a reason, and encouraging families that now more than ever, is the time to build forts together.
For example:
My nieces, Kate, (pictured), and Jenna, (not pictured), are representing the east coast in Boston, MA.
Meanwhile…
My niece, Sidney is representing the West Coast in Petaluma, CA.
They’re ALL amazing! Keep 'em comin'!!
The song and video choice this week is the best song that came out of 1995, and is dedicated to my two best friends for the last twenty-five years, Emily and Hadara. Enjoy.:)
P.S. I am 40.5 today.:) Happy St. Patrick’s Day!!!
