Last Sunday I met a mustached surfer with warm eyes, a kind smile, and a great name; he surfs short board, his name is Peter, and he is dating Hannah. I have heard about Peter for months, but was finally able to meet him for the first time on Sunday. However, before our lovely lunch date commenced, (which included Hannah and Marion, too) I failed at completing a run workout.
I was confused about what wasn’t clicking? I slept a minimum of eight hours on Saturday night, (a solid two+ more than my usual routine for decades), I ate a protein and fat rich dinner, (literally a mountain of beans and nuts), and I chugged and then sipped on NUUN infused water during and after my ride, and then well into the night. Still, I woke up with a headache, heavy legs, and zero zip in my gait; what was the deal?
I rode very well the day before. In fact, better than I have in months, and was excited to not just run on Sunday morning, but run this specific TEMPO workout, it is one of my favorites, and I was confident I nailed every detail to insure I would rock it on Sunday morning.
Nope.
The upside is that even though I would’ve preferred to be in a conquering mood on the first occasion that I met Hannah’s handsome lad, that run workout was not my priority, rather it was meeting him, and spending time with Marion and Hannah. Plus, seeing Hannah so happy, and noticing that Peter was beyond smitten completely washed away my down mood and allowed me to simply enjoy our lunch together.
Later that night, after attempting and failing the run workout for a second time, I told Marion, “Well, today was a failure on the workout front, but it was a success personally. I really like Peter.”
Fortunately, after logging my lackluster performance, Hillary granted me another crack at the run workout on Monday morning.
Still, during the warm up miles I was unsure if I would hit the time targets I needed for the intervals, but once they arrived I nailed them all with a pleasant combo of ease and effort.
I am still not positive what wiped me out on Sunday morning? However, my hypothesis is that I didn’t eat enough carbs on Saturday night, and since I slept longer than usual, and drank two cups of coffee first thing on Sunday morning, I was probably dehydrated, too. Therefore, I should've included more carbs, like sweet potatoes, farro, quinoa, or pasta along with my “Protein packed Plate” for dinner, and drank a big glass of water as soon as I woke up, followed by one cup of coffee vs. two.
You'd think I'd have it all figured out by now, but it is still a work in progress.
Along the lines of sleep health, (my biggest priority these days), I recommend listening to and/or watching Rich Roll’s interview with the calming, redheaded sleep expert, Dr. Matthew Walker.
Also, his book Why We Sleep is incredible, and a “must read” in my opinion.
In more podcast news, my friend, and Ultraman Canada, 2019, women’s champion, Kat Zeiler, is featured in this episode of 515: The Ultraman Podcast. It’s a fantastic interview that goes beyond Kat’s experience at Ultraman, but delves into her entire athletic journey, and my guess is that it will inspire many of you parents to sign up your kiddos for a 5K.
Finally, the song and video today is Coldplay’s new catchy single, Higher Power.
P.S. I am still perplexed that my girl Gwyneth let Chris Martin go?
