It’s amazing what a quality night of sleep can do for this redhead. On Sunday night, I logged maybe four hours of slumber which made Monday a head-heavy blur. It was also nearly 110F degrees in my neighborhood, a fact that didn’t help the head throbbing, (or heart-throbbing), but that had more to do with why I didn’t sleep much on Sunday night, because Sunday night was the (Creative Arts) Emmys!!
The whole week leading up to Sunday was punctuated by Emmy related tasks.
Monday: Buy dress and make-up (gulp).
Tuesday: Research where to get COVID PCR test.
Friday: Pedal 100 miles, pick up Marion’s tuxedo, and get a PCR test. (COVID negative, woo-hoo!!)
Saturday: Run hard on the treadmill vs. run outside because it was a billion degrees, and spend time speechwriting for one of the nominees for Best Special Visual Effects in A Series Or Movie, my hub, and current Vancouver resident, Marion.
Then on Sunday, it was “GO!” time from sunup to way past sundown: Lift, run, hair, make-up, drive downtown, rock the red carpet, sit through the Emmys, attend the “Emmys Gala”, celebrate at the Netflix “After Party”, drive home, and try to catch some zzz's.
I can’t say that I believed Marion and his crew from Stranger Things were a shoe in for the win. These awards are just too tricky to predict, but I did believe that they were the favorite, and out of Marion’s four nominations, that *this* year was his best chance for the win. That said, Star Wars is synonymous with Visual Effects, and if you work on a project that contends with any Star Wars story, (in this case, The Book Of Boba Fett), well, it’s gonna be tough to beat.
And this year, it was.
The Book Of Boba Fett (aka, Star Wars) won, Stranger Things lost.
Talk about being turned Upside Down.
My stomach dropped as I heard the crackle of Marion’s broken heart. He deserved to win. Says the jilted nominee’s wife/producer/long ago co-worker/best friend, but no one deserves anything.
That's not how life works.
And that is certainly not how show business works.
The awards are determined by the Television Academy voters, not the millions of fans obsessed with Stranger Things, or its VFX Supervisor’s wives. So, although Marion didn’t walk away with a trophy, he did play a vital role in the pop culture phenomenon that has been Stranger Things: Season 4, which in my opinion, in the grand scheme of things, is the real win. Am I right, Jenna and Kaia??
Moreover, since this year’s awards were representative for episodes 401-407, Marion might be nominated again for episodes 408-409 that will be eligible next year.
Stay tuned…
Regardless, win, lose, or draw, I had a wonderful night!
For the first time in my life, I wasn’t nervous being dressed up. I didn’t feel like I was wearing a costume, and I didn’t feel like an imposter, rather I felt comfortable in my own painted skin, and truly enjoyed every minute of the night. Except the losing part, of course.
Most of all, it was so special to share an adventure downtown with Marion and Hannah. It was a unique family night for sure, but we are a unique family.
Speaking of family, Netflix took good care of us all night.
Plus, spending time with Marion’s comrades and their families (all exceptional human beings) made the blow of losing much easier to swallow and continually make this insane business/career/life much more bearable, and definitely inspiring.
All that said, the show must go on.
Marion was whisked back up to set in Vancouver last night, I am writing my blog in between workouts #2 and #3 of the day, and this ridiculous heat wave is still raging; 99F has never felt so cool…
The song and video choice this week is a current hit, Late Night Talking from Harry Styles, but the video coincides with the theme of the week because it shows “behind the scenes” shots including blue screens, a necessary tool for creating visual effects, which is what Marion is working with right now on set for his current project. Fun stuff!
